Strange Things People Found In Their Homes
They say that home is where the heart is, but for these people, it's also where the secret doors are, and the spooky dolls, and the scary antiques, and the hidden cash stacks. These people have found some crazy things in their homes. Keep reading to see some strange items that were lurking in basements, attics, and closets.
These pictures might even inspire you to take another look in the crevices of your own house.
That's Unnerving
This Reddit user posted a picture of this door he found in the basement of his workplace. What is behind this door that it needs to be closed at all times?
Could there be a creature down there? Or some kind of secret society? We don't even want to know what the previous owners of this building were into. Let's just keep the door closed and back away slowly. Curiosity can only lead to trouble in this situation.
Dirty Monopoly
These people were renovating their home. When they pulled up the carpet in their living room, they found this Monopoly board painted on the hardwood underneath. Now that's creative! You can play giant Monopoly!
We really hope that they tried to restore this floor rather than covering it up with carpet again or ripping it out. Who wouldn't want to play giant Monopoly? This seems like such fun feature to have in your home.
A Skeleton For School
This photo was posted with the caption, "Found this in the attic of the house I'm leasing for the school year." Is this supposed to be a skeleton? We can't tell.
Well, I am officially creeped out by whatever this is supposed to be. It has beady eyes and a tongue and no real nose. it kind of reminds us of Lord Voldemort. This thing is a whole lot of nope and we want it to go away.
A Hidden Shelter
Somebody posted this photo on Reddit with the caption, "I have uncovered a 1960s fallout shelter in my backyard that was built by Whitaker Pools." At least he has somewhere to go if things get crazy.
It's probably pretty comforting to know that you have a safe space like this to retreat to if things ever get really bad in the world. Do you think he got any use out of this thing in 2020?
Found In An Abandoned Home
After buying an abandoned home, this person found a relic of the past in their new basement. This sign is going to be worth some serious cash money one day.
There's only one Blockbuster store left in America. Pretty soon that one is going to be gone and then this sign will be worth even more. It's crazy to think that owning a Blockbuster sign is like owning a piece of history. This thing is oozing with nostalgia.
Bootleg Liquor
This photo was posted with the caption, "My father was remodeling our 1933 farmhouse and found these hidden under the work bench." These moonshine bottles are from the Prohibition era.
It's crazy to think that the American government once thought that it was a good idea to outlaw alcohol altogether. That doesn't mean that people stopped drinking though. People found ways to make their own alcoholic beverages out of household ingredients. I didn't taste great but it did the trick.
A Giant Missile
This man was repiping his house when he found this giant missile hidden amongst the plumbing. He doesn't know how it got there or what he's going to do with it.
If I were him, I would probably contact a war museum to see if they would consider putting this thing on display. Also, somebody should make sure that it's not live. You wouldn't want a missile that big blowing up in your own backyard.
Hidden In The Ceiling
This couple was renovating their house when they found two small green containers in their basement ceiling. When they opened them up, they found a bunch of old newspapers and approximately $45,000!
That's a lot of cash! That amount of money probably covered their entire renovation. They didn't know they were getting such a good deal when they bought this place. Some people just get really lucky. What can we do to get cash to magically materialize?
A Secret Room
This person found a secret room tucked away in the attic of their new house. The door to get in measures four feet tall and one-and-a-half feet wide. The room contains a small window, some shelving, and a cot.
It looks like a secret little crawlspace that kids would love to play in. We love little hidden treasures like this. It would be so fun to have a sleepover in a place like this and to decorate it with fairy lights and a fresh coat of paint.
Where Does It Lead?
Someone found this never-ending hole in their basement. We don't even want to know what's at the bottom of that thing. It looks like it belongs in a horror movie.
I mean, a hole can't actually be never-ending, right? It has to end at some point. The question is, where does it end, and what's at the bottom of it? Is that a question we even want to know the answer to? Maybe it's better left a mystery.
Found In A Safe
While they were renovating their kitchen, a couple discovered a safe in the floor. They managed to unlock it and found the following inside: over $50,000 in cash, a rare bottle of bourbon, a book titled A Guide for the Perplexed, and a BINGO card.
This is what everybody dreams to find in the floorboards of their home when they do a renovation. Don't start ripping apart your home trying to find cash, though. Finds like this are extremely rare.
A Treasure Hunt
Someone posted this picture with the caption, "My friend found a 40-year-old treasure hunt hidden behind a mirror in her dorm." She followed the clues in the treasure hunt and the clues led her to this mural.
Well, it may not be $50,000 but it's still pretty exciting. Somebody painted this with their own two hands a really long time ago. Connecting with art is a way to connect with people in the past. It's pretty exciting.
The Servants' Quarters
Two homeowners who moved into their family's estate uncovered a fully stocked servants' kitchen hidden behind a collection of old junk in the basement. This is where the servants used to live way back in the day.
It would be so cool to turn those servant's quarters into some kind of guest house. Get that space on Airbnb pronto! It looks so cool down there. It also tells the story of this property's rich history.
Really Old Skittles
Somebody posted this picture on Reddit with the caption, "Found an old military ration in my basement. I opened it. SKITTLES!!" Apparently, Skittles are really old, and they haven't changed their packaging in a while.
Here's the real question, though. If you found a really old package of Skittles in your basement would you eat them? And would they taste the same as our modern-day Skittles? I might have to try one just out of curiosity.
A Creepy Baby
These people were cleaning out their attic when they found an old picture of a creepy baby. They do not know this baby. Nobody knows this baby. Maybe he's a ghost.
Well, it's time to throw this thing out and never look at it again. Although, that might anger the ghost if it is still living in this house. Maybe just leave the picture in the attic where it was found and never look at it again?
Interesting Linoleum
Somebody posted this photo on Reddit with the caption, "Cousin was pulling up the carpet in a very old home and found this 'interesting' linoleum design." That really is interesting! It kind of looks like R2-D2 from Star Wars.
It isn't actually all that in line with my style, but I can definitely appreciate the work and thought that went into creating this flooring in the first place. it kind of looks like something that belongs in an '80s bowling alley or rollerblading arena.
A Hidden Gem
A Faberge figurine commissioned by Russian Czar Nicholas II in 1912 was found in an attic in New York. It sold at auction for $5.2 million. Why is this thing worth so much?
I mean, I get that it has historical value but it seems crazy that somebody would pay so much money for a doll. Well, to each their own I guess. People can spend their money however they want. Some people really want dolls that look like Russian royalty.
Crawling In The Walls
Apparently, this is "wall art" that was found in an abandoned house. I don't know about you, but this isn't the kind of art that I want anywhere near the place where I sleep.
Let's just hope that this actually is an art piece and not a demon trapped in the wall of this house. Who decided that this would be a good design choice? it seems like the worst idea ever. The execution is pretty good though.
The Ugliest Bunny
We thought bunnies were supposed to be cute. This bunny painting isn't cute at all. Apparently, someone found this hanging in the basement of their mother's apartment building. That building is definitely haunted.
Why is this thing up on the wall right now and not buried in a hole way beneath the ground? It definitely should not be on display anywhere that people with eyes can see it. It's way too creepy. Let's all just move right along.
Now What?
Somebody posted this photo on Reddit with the caption, "Just bought a house. Moved in 2 days ago and found this in the basement. Now what?" Now he should try to open it!
They probably won't find $50,000 down there, but hey, you never know. Does anybody know how to crack a safe? Let's get a locksmith in here so we can figure out what's actually lurking behind that metal door. The suspense is killing us.
Did They Get Up And Walk There?
"My dad found a bunch of green army men tied up hanging in his wall. They were doing renovations and decided to knock down a wall. Underneath the plaster, in the space between the two plaster pieces, there were dozens of green army men, tied around their necks with string hanging down."
Well, that's a little bit scary. Okay, maybe it's a lot scary. Did Sid from Toy Story live in that house before the current owners?
A Spooky Clown Costume
This Reddit user told the internet, "My sophomore year we moved into a house with a pretty sweet basement. We found a sort of cubbyhole closet in the back. There was nothing in that cubby but a suitcase containing a clown costume and balloons, and an unopened can of bud light that had expired in 2002."
If that's not scary, I don't know what is. Clowns are way too terrifying. Let's just back away from that basement.
A Close Call
A family bought a new house from an older couple, and while they were getting settled in, they found a grenade in one of their kitchen cabinets. The father realized that the pin had been pulled so he moved his family out of harm's way and called the bomb squad. It turns out, the grenade was a dud.
That could have been a really bad situation, but luckily, luck was on their side that day.
A Secret Speakeasy
This Reddit user wrote, "My house was built in 1904. When re-doing the basement, we discovered a weird sliding panel with accompanying shelf space behind the wall, which looked a bit like a bar and faced where the driveway used to be... we did some research and discovered that previous homeowners got into trouble for selling moonshine during prohibition"
Well, it's a good thing moonshine isn't illegal anymore. Now it's perfectly fine to have alcohol in your house.
A Toilet Paper Toy
This person found a little unicycling man toilet paper holder in the bathroom at his parents' house. Somebody made this on purpose, and then somebody bought it and put it in their home. That's insane.
I think it's actually pretty cute. Of all the weird things we've seen on this list, this is probably the most innocent. Who wouldn't want a little unicycling man on their toilet paper? He's just living the toilet paper dream.
Here's Looking At You, Kid
You don't even have to go into this house to get a taste of how creepy it is. All you have to do is look at the window. That is one creepy doll.
If I had a doll like this in my house, I wouldn't display it in the window. I'd put it in the basement where nobody could find it or I'd just throw it away. Don't put a thing this creep where other people can see it (unless it's Halloween).
A Horse, Of Course
This person found a terrifying horse puppet in his grandparents' basement. Why would anybody own an object this scary? It looks like it's bleeding or like it just ate some gross meat.
I don't like it at all. Forget owning it in the first place, why would anybody hold onto an object this terrifying? Who knows, maybe this old toy is worth something? It doesn't look like it's worth very much though. It looks like it belongs in the trash.
A Doll Christmas Tree
This person has a Christmas tree made of dolls in their house. It's supposed to be Santa's job to bring the toys. What's he going to say when he sees them all hanging in a pyramid formation?
This is not cool at all. This isn't what Christmas is supposed to be about. We're supposed to give kids presents, not hang them on trees. This is way too eerie. Let's just pretend we never saw it in the first place.
Land Ho!
We're not sure where this frog thinks he's going, but he's not going to get there in a hurry rinding this turtle. Both because turtles don't move very fast and because this is a statue.
We don't know what prompted somebody to create this very strange sculpture but we can't say that we're mad that it exists. There's something sort of charming about this even though it's very very strange. Is it weird that I kind of want one?
Sunbathing
Someone found this impressive cross stitch creation at her mother-in-law's house. Apparently, her husband's very proper grandmother made it. This looks pretty big. It must have taken a long time to make.
Grandma obviously put a lot of time and effort into this creation and her work paid off, I guess? I mean, I wouldn't want to hang this on my wall, but to each their own. Some people might be into this naked lady drinking a martini on the beach.
His Mom's Ticket From The '80s
While rifling through an old photo album, this girl came across her mom's ticket from the '80s from when she visited the twin towers of the old World Trade Center.
This piece of paper has a whole different feel to it now. Nobody could have known how important this ticket would become in just a couple of decades. This ticket is now a piece of history and sadly, nobody else will ever have one quite like it.
They Found This In The Attic
Upon moving into a new place, this person was cleaning out the attic when they came across this retro can of 7Up. It was part of a limited edition set that included all of the states.
It's crazy to think that this soda has been around for that long. It also gives you a glimpse into what the world looked like in the 1960s. The graphic design on this can is actually pretty impressive. We're into the colors.
From November 23rd, 1963
The assassination of John F. Kennedy is one of the most infamous moments of 20th century American history. A guy found an original newspaper from the day after it happened.
How much do you think this paper is worth today? We have to imagine that a lot of families saved newspapers that chronicled important moments in American history. A paper like this can't be all that rare, can it? Still, it has to be worth quite a bit more than it cost at the time.
TI Has Haunted Generations Of Students.
If you've ever had to take a college (and even some high school) math class, you're familiar with the Texas Instruments calculator. This is a version of that calculator from 1977 in brand new condition.
Something about the design of this calculator is so very '70s. It's the square buttons and the minimal linear design that does it, I think. It kind of looks like every machine that came out of that decade. I kind of want one.
This Lightbulb Is Over 100 Years Old
This person found this old bulb in their grandparents' historic home. It turns out that it was originally brought into the house in 1902 and by some miracle, it still works!
I guess they don't make lightbulbs like they used to. Our modern lightbulbs would burn out after a year or so, especially the incandescent ones. The fluorescent lightbulbs last a little bit longer, but not quite this long. Maybe this light wasn't used all that much in the past.
Just A Photo Of Taylor Swift Lying Around
While sifting through old family albums, this girl found a photo of pop artist Taylor Swift from when she was a kid. As it turns out, her older sisters had been friends with Taylor when they were kids.
Now we're wondering how many other people randomly have photos of young Taylor Swift at their birthday parties or family functions back in the day? Taylor looks as girly as ever in her frilly party dress. What a style evolution.
Ever Just Accidentally Stumble Across A Secret Room?
This person, upon accidentally hitting the wall, realized it was a little too hollow on the other side. They ended up finding a secret room made by a past owner.
This doesn't mean that you should go around hitting the walls of your house to see if there are any secret rooms behind them, though. Let's just assume that all of the walls are solid so you don't do any irreparable damage to your home.
I Guess Construction Leads To Fashion
While doing some renovations in her home, this woman came across a dress in a walled-off closet and had to try it out. The house was built in 1965 and the dress was handmade around the same time.
What's really incredible about this find is that it fits her perfectly. It's almost like somebody in the past left a present just for her. What are the odds of that happening? It looks pretty good on her too.
So That's Who's Been Playing In The Sandbox
For the past few weeks, this family noticed that they were having a visitor come through their backyard every once in a while. They finally found the culprit sneaking around.
Even if you're not an animal person, you have to admit that that's a pretty adorable little red fox. He looks so innocent sitting up there in his den. An adorable fox visitor might be the best kind of visitor to have. Look at those eyes!
Found In His Late Grandmother's House
When going through the things in his grandmother's house, he came across this birthday card. Apparently, he insisted on giving her the two dimes and his mom signed it for him. He was touched to see she had kept it.
Is there a better gift than two ten-cent coins from a person that you love? I don't think so. This is a gift that truly came from the heart. Grandmothers love gifts that come from the heart.
